For our new year’s resolutions, my friends and I promised that we would go travelling more often. So far we’ve kept to it but much to my unwillingness, we usually travel to the destination on the road at night. In those dark nights, the Smith & Wesson Galaxy28 LED Flashlight has been a good companion.

Smith & Wesson Galaxy28 LED Flashlight emits an excellent beam of white light that’s enough to illuminates your way around in the dark. But our favorite feature is the red and blue 4 LED light mode. They’re great for preserving night vision when reading maps without obstructing the driver’s vision with any bright light.

The longevity of the battery is great. We’ve been using the same ones since our first trip in February and it still holds out. Do bear in mind that we’ve been only constantly using the 4-LED mode that was designed for conserving the battery power instead of the 20-LED mode.

Although we’ve taken good care of the flashlight, I believe that it’s durable enough to withstand any accidents. The body of the flashlight is stylish and feels good in the hand. There are also features that prevent the flashlight from rolling off countertops and your hand; squared ends and grooved mid-section.

I’m no aviation pilot or EMS but I’ve read that this flashlight have served them well during night duties. So whether you work night shifts or night travelers such as my friends and me, the Smith & Wesson Galaxy28 LED Flashlight can be a great addition to your tool kit.

Ever since the renovation, my house seemed to have regular power outages; maybe due to bad wiring or overloading of electricity mains. These outages vary during the day but always during the night. In these uncertainties, I have resorted to a few Intermatic PR3C Three-in-One Emergency Power Failure Light for safety, security and convenience purposes.

On a usual night, Intermatic PR3C Three-in-One Emergency Power Failure Light act as night lights that are useful for lighting areas that you need to walk in the dark at night (such as the hallway to the bathroom). When there is no power, the lights will automatically switch to a brighter white emergency light that is reflected to a wide beam so that you can pilot your way around the house. There is a on/ off switch that controls this behavior so you can manually set this function.

Although I mentioned that it switch to a brighter white emergency light when there are power failures, do keep in mind that it does not have the means to light up your whole house. It only functions to adequately navigate you around the house to get the power back up or get an alternate light source in emergencies.

Being an avid camper, a good flashlight/ lantern is a must in my pack. The Garrity KP052 Rechargeable 20 LED Crank Lantern with AM/FM Radio is one of the best I have used so far.

The great thing about this lantern is that it is rechargeable not only by an AC/ DC adapter but also by a hand crank. I love that it can be manually recharged because face it, where would you find an AC/ DC adapter in the woods? It also has an alternate power source from three AA batteries should the rechargeable battery runs low.

Garrity KP052 Rechargeable 20 LED Crank Lantern with AM/FM Radio is not the brightest one around but the light is clear and sufficient enough to light your immediate area. You can also adjust the brightness of the light should you feel necessary but for myself, I think it would be a rare occasion to turn down the power.

There is also a cell phone charger port and an AM/FM radio built into the lantern. I was skeptical of the radio at first but it surprisingly works well. It’s great when you want to get updated with the weather forecast when you’re out camping. I’ve yet to try the cell phone charger (I leave them at home anyways when I go out camping) but it is connected through a USB adapter.

To conclude, this is a good product with lots of bells and whistles for an affordable price. The Garrity KP052 Rechargeable 20 LED Crank Lantern with AM/FM Radio is not only useful for outdoor activities but also great during power outages.

Having to endure many sudden blackouts (my sister believe that our neighborhood is in some ‘black’ area) that my dad had brought home many flashlight and one of them is the MAGLITE ST3D016 3-D Cell LED Flashlight.

Other than looking nice in any color (I’ve seen the array in my dad’s shop), it’s solidly constructed and I’ve heard from some policemen that it’s a great self-defense tool. It can be used to blind an attacker and it’s a nice impact weapon due to its heaviness.

MAGLITE ST3D016 3-D Cell LED Flashlight also enables you to focus the light from a floodlight that instantly light up a whole room to a tight beam. The different beams are uniform in terms if brightness and intensity. There is an extra bulb in the tailcap should you manage to bust the original one, although that rarely happens to anyone.

On the downside, it does get dimmer as the batteries wear out. It will die on you without warning so be prepared with spare batteries. They run on 3-D cells that are fairly cheap so that they won’t drag you back financially.

Although its heftiness is a plus when it comes to self-defense, this flashlight won’t do you any favors when you are backpacking or hiking. My sister learnt that the hard way when she came back from a backpacking trip achier than usual.

Overall, the MAGLITE ST3D016 3-D Cell LED Flashlight is a great light if you don’t mind the lack of longevity of the batteries and its bulk. Also, it’s too bright for close in use, so if you’re considering to get this flashlight, do so if it is the right tool for you.

Other than that, the DEWALT DW919 18-Volt Flexible Floodlight is a good buy to complement your tool kit. Not only it is convenient, its impact resistant body makes it rugged and safe to be used around other electronics.

For the camping enthusiast like me, a night time light source is a must in my backpack. For me, the personal sized Coleman Rugged Battery Powered Lantern is useful without the extra size and weight as some lanterns can be.

So, I pretty much use the Low setting most of the time to save the battery charge from 14 hours (on High setting) to more than 20 hours per continuous use.

Even though Coleman Rugged Battery Powered Lantern is not as bright as the other available lanterns in the market, it illuminates the immediate area adequately with a clear beam. The light output is enough to light a moderately sized tent for 4 to 5 people.

Despite the fact that it is made from plastic, it is well made and rugged enough to endure the harshness of outdoor activities; the lantern is weather- and shatter-proof so it will not wear out and fall to pieces easily. Other than being sturdy, it is lightweight and easy to carry around by the attached handles. The handle has a non-slip rubberized grip to them so that it won’t easily slip out of your hands.

Durable, convenient and energy efficient, the Coleman Rugged Battery Powered Lantern is affordable for everyone. Not only it is useful for outdoor activities, it is perfect indoors during long blackouts occurrences.

The maximum setting emits a very bright light perfect for exploring caves or a night hike. The blinking mode on the other hand produces a strobe light for signaling emergencies. I find the economic setting useful when I need a more dim lighting to read books before going to bed.

This headlamp is lightweight so it won’t strain your neck and it is compact to carry around. The headband is thick enough to secure it on your head and it does not slide off easily. Adding to that, it uses power efficiently that you can save on batteries.

The Petzl E47 PS Tikka Plus 4-LED Headlamp is one of the best headlamps to bring when you are doing outdoor activities. Even though there are debates saying that its design could be better, to each their own, as I think this is a great gear to add in a backpack.

Its strong and sturdy built also means that it will last longer. It will withstand any falls or accident without effort. I have personally used it to hammer small objects and it still holds on great.

Although the MagLite ST4D016 4-D Cell LED Flashlight costs more than the normal plastic flashlights, it will last for a lifetime. Its great built, usability and quality are worth every penny of it.

Pros
For a small lighting gadget, ‘GIANT Light – Small Package’ LED Flashlight gives out a very bright light. The beam is wide, uniform without any rings. I brought this one on a camping trip and it served quite well during the night hike in the pitch dark woods. There is also a slight blue tint but it doesn’t bother me much.

The flashlight is lightweight, making it easy to carry around for camping trips or as a tool in your emergency kit. Among others, I find this flashlight is the best priced for its simplicity. There are other more compact, high-tech flashlights if you are willing to pay for it.

Cons
Keep extra batteries if intend to use this flashlight on a regular basis – say if you use it as part of your job repairing electronics. The flashlight goes through the AAA batteries rather quickly.

Another thing that irked me was that it’s poorly manufactured. When I first used it, it kept on dimming and flickering. It was annoying as I had to keep on tapping the flashlight. A friend also encountered this before and pointed out that it was a connection problem between the batteries and the copper tabs. All it took was to bend the small tab outwards so that it would make better contact with the batteries.

If you don’t mind its flaws, the ‘GIANT Light – Small Package’ LED Flashlight is the flashlight if you are looking for a compact but powerful flashlight. Although the batteries may set you back a bit, the manufacturing problem is an easy fix.

I hate it when the batteries of my flashlights seem to run out of juice when I needed the most. Often I need to brave in the dark and end up with a stubbed toe but ever since I got the Garrity Power Lite 3 LED Crank Light, it’s never the case since.

The first time I got this Garrity Power Lite 3 LED Crank Light, I thought that it might be too much of a work just to get some light. Boy, was I wrong. It is actually easy to crank because of its rubberized waist. Cranking up the flashlight is quick and easy without any obstacles because of its narrow rubberized waist coupled with the angle of the extended hand-crank.

In my opinion, the mechanism produces long lasting power source for the flashlight. For an hour use, 3 minutes of cranking should do it. I also find that if you turn off the flashlight after cranking, it will actually store the charge for quite some time. This feature proves to be handy when there’s an unexpected blackout.

The feature I like most of this Garrity Power Lite 3 LED Crank Light is the ability to control the brightness output of the lights. The first click of the power button will automatically turn on all 3 LED bulbs. A second click will reduce it to 1 bulb, if you want a dimmer light. The 1 light option will also allow the power to retain more life.

Although the light is bright and illuminates quite a distance, I find that it is not as bright as the conventional battery operated flashlights. However, Garrity Power Lite 3 LED Crank Light serves its purpose well in emergencies or in other situations that may not need the brightness and wider light beams.
